Community Resource and Health Fair
On September 30th Center Point had the pleasure of attending the first Community Resource and Health Fair at Fair Street IB World School. In attendance were 18 other service organizations ranging in services from eye to after school care. Representatives from these organizations shared information with attendees (in both English and Spanish) about the wealth of community services Gainesville has to offer including onsite free health screenings, spinal exams, blood pressure, and vision tests.
The event was organized by Gainesville City Schools’ parent coordinators and school counselors with the overall goal of reaching into our community and offering an understanding of the services available to residents. An initiative to promote healthy and productive lives has sparked interest in the continuation of this event annually; Fair Street Principal, Dr. William Campbell announced that this tradition will continue next year at Wood’s Mill Academy.
Center Point representatives were able to share information about the services offered to Hall County residents including: counseling, substance abuse prevention, religious education, and mentoring. In particular, the Mentor Program was a highlight of the event where many residents volunteered to make a difference in the life of a child. With the drastic reduction in mentor participation the program has seen over the past year, it is with great optimism that the message was well-received and will translate into more mentors trained and lives touched.
