Mentor FAQ

Do you have questions or concerns about the mentor program? The following questions are those most frequently asked. If you have a question that you would like answered and posted on this page, please use the form below to submit it.

  1. I travel frequently. Can I still be a mentor?

Yes. Just be sure and tell your student and the school counselor when you will be gone. Knowing ahead of time helps students adjust to your absence.

  2. Can I see my student after school hours?

Center Point Mentor Program is a school-based program. Mentors meet with their students during school hours on school grounds. If over a period of time your relationship develops where you wish to meet with your student off-campus, you must have the parents sign a Parent Release of Liability form and return it to Center Point. This form releases Center Point from liability.

  3. My student is highly distractible and it takes the entire 30 minutes just to get him/her to settle down. What should I do?

Speak with your school counselor and mentor coordinator to ask for suggestions on how to get the student to focus. If you try several interventions and you are still having difficulty, contact the mentor coordinator for a reassignment.

  4. What if I don't get along with my student?

It often takes several meetings before a student warms to his mentor. Occasionally the mentor-student match is not a good fit. If you have met with your student four or more times and you do not feel that he/she is enjoying the interaction, let the school counselor and the mentor coordinator know your concerns.

  5. Are there different mentoring programs? What are they designed to achieve? Thanks, Chris

We have two different programs. One is for all at-risk students in Gainesville City and Hall County. The training includes only one 2-hour training. We have also started a new program for students who have a family member incarcerated. Additional training is required for this program, called Mentorsplus!

I hope this answer is timely. Our tech guy just found this question and he does not know how old it is. Please feel free to email me directly with additional questions at mentor@centerpointgainesville.com.

  6. Thank you for your service to this community, When is your next mentor training? Can I choose a student we work with through Lakewood ministries? Sincerely, Robert Puckett

Our next training is Tuesday, November 17th from 6-8pm. Yes, you may choose the student you wish to work with.
